There are some incredible AUV's and UUV's coming out onto the market now. The two main interests come from the oil and gas and defence industries. Janes has just profiled a new UUV from BAE which is pretty incredible. Here is a related article.
Talisman UUV is out of the black
Interesting proposal from Oregon State university and other state agencies to do an intensive mapping effort of the territorial seafloor off the Oregon coast. They want to use multi-beam sonar to map it and replace the outdated depth charts.
They should be doing more of this kind of thing.
